Artist Statement

The content of my work has reflected my fascination with those social, psychological and historical influences that shape our perceptions of reality and how, in turn, those perceptions affect our interpersonal and social relationships as well as our sense of identity.

The vehicle for this exploration has been the utilization of painting mediums i.e. oil paint, canvas etc. in combination with more quotidian materials including reused wood and metal, salvaged building materials, architectural moldings and found objects. The painting supports, again range from old discarded doors, plywood and other materials salvaged from construction sites, dumpsters, and second-hand stores or found in the street. These may be combined with conventional artist's canvas. All possess the patina of age and use, or disuse, and thus contribute their own mysterious and suggested histories. In the process of executing a given piece the found objects, religious statuettes, rusted wire, nails and/or sheet metal are incorporated directly into the composition along with the paint.

This juxtaposition of a meticulously rendered visual narrative and the salvaged and irregularly shaped materials creates a dialogue, and at times an argument, between the visual illusion of the image and the sheer physicality of the medium and the objects upon which that image is rendered, thus, becoming a metaphor for the ambiguous nature of both physical and psychological realities.
